The Reef Institute is a local organization dedicated to coral conservation through education, research and restoration and is partnering with the Cox Science Center on a number of projects including a coral reef tank for the Aquariums of the Atlantic at the Science Center.
The Marine Science Activity that Reef Institute carries out include:
- Sunscreen Challenge: Teaches guests how to choose sunscreens that are better for them and the ocean (samples are given out).
- Shark Senses: Interactive activity that teaches students about the 7 (some argue 8) sense that sharks have.
- Fish/Coral Memory/ID: Using our fish cards we do a quick interaction to teach how to identify coral vs sponge in the water, and then how to identify animals in the water.
This activation will also feature a Solar Boat activity pool run by Northrop Grumman, a local aerospace and defense company that partners with the Cox Science Center on a number of engineering events throughout the year.
